Focus Days with Mike FitzpatrickThis week we are very fortunate to host one of the most skilled presenters in Australia, Mike Fitzpatrick. He is conducting full day workshops with our Year 11 and Year 12 students over a three day period as part of our "Focus Days" initiative. Mike has worked with our students over a 25 year period and always presents with an inclusive approach. Mike's days are uniformly enjoyed and his focus is entirely on students being present with one another and talking about their concerns, fears and hopes for the future. Mike has a unique skill which enables our students to name their hopes, aspirations and concerns in a safe space. Students meet people outside their friendship groups, enjoy a break from electronic devices, and communicate with one another face to face. Mike does not shy away from challenging students in a supportive manner and reiterates the values that Guilford Young College is built on. Please take time to talk to your child about their experience this week. Blair Brownless — Deputy Principal

University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT)This standardised exam serves as a vital component of university applications for prospective medical (direct entry) and dental students. UCAT scores play a crucial role in the university application process, helping institutions evaluate candidates' suitability for their programs. In preparation for the exam, the National Institute of Education has offered some resources. First up is the Pathways into Medicine and Dentistry Live Webinar scheduled for April 3. This FREE event is open to students, parents, and teachers alike. The webinar is for students currently contemplating a future in these fields. The expert speaker will cover topics ranging from UCAT overview to application processes, preparation strategies, and more. Plus, there's a dedicated Q&A session to address all your queries. You can register for the UCAT and download a helpful list of hints and tips. Of course I’d love to hear how I can assist applicants further just email me! The Academic Resource Centre (ARC) celebrated International Women’s Day this March, with a display that emphasised the diverse challenges women face, such as discrimination, wage disparities, and systemic barriers. We displayed texts that spoke to the United Nations IWD 2024 theme: Invest in Women: Accelerate progress. We also reflected on the success of the ARC’s "Recreational Reading" program, developed in collaboration with GYC’s Literacy Leaders. Underpinned by the principles of "Reader Advisory Training," the ARC's “Recreational Reading” program assists students and staff in choosing texts to read for pleasure, offering ongoing support and individualised recommendations, as well as tracking engagement. Having smoothly integrated “Recreational Reading” in two classes in 2024, English Writing and English Foundations - we extend our thanks to the students and teachers for their generous participation and look forward to continuing the program in the future! Come and visit us in the ARC and share your reading preferences with us. We’d love to hear from you! Demelza Hall – Academic Resource Centre Leader
