Welcome to Term 2!
Term 2 is busy with some significant activities on the calendar including Reconciliation Week, the mid-year exam period, decisions around course selections (for Year 11s) and course advice sessions for all students coming to GYC in 2025. We see rehearsals for the College Musical (Legally Blonde) revving up and the return of the College Expo.
There is a lot for students and families to plan for but let’s not lose sight of the simple yet important things that you, our students can do on a daily basis. I’ve been known to say (in my classes) that punctuality is the secret to success. My message to you particularly at this stage of the year is to turn up, on time and go to all your classes with a positive attitude and a desire to learn as much as you can in what is such a short time with us.
Taking pride in how you present in uniform is very important to me and to the College. With two campuses, GYC students are highly visible in the wider community and I want our brand to be presented well and received positively by the public. I also encourage you to wear your formal uniform more regularly especially on the days when you don’t have a sport subject.
The flip side of the ‘rules’ is for us to remember that each day brings new opportunities; you can fully engage in your work in an environment that buzzes with potential and learning. Every class you attend, every assignment you complete and every discussion you enter into is a building block in your educational journey. Give your best no matter how small the task and contribute to a culture of excellence and mutual support that sets Guilford Young College apart. Respect for self, for others and for our environment is of great importance and value to the GYC community and the strength of our community is reflected in how we support one another. Let’s work in earnest to foster an environment where our values of love, respect, growth, courage and connection are at the heart of everything we do. Together we can make GYC the place to be!
Extended Holidays
I ask that families are mindful of not taking their sons/daughters out of school for extended breaks or holidays. To help understand the impact this may have, a two-week holiday for a Year 11 student will result in 30 missed classes; 6 per subject. Students run the risk of falling behind and catching up can be difficult. Please contact me directly if planning significant breaks.
The Academic Resource Centre (ARC)
On 13 June the Academic Resource Centre will be officially blessed and opened by His Grace, Archbishop Porteous. But! It will no longer be called the ARC. It will become The Davis Centre, named after Guilford Young College’s first Principal, Sr Pamela Davis. Now that the space is live and lived in, it has become much more than an academic resource space. It really is a one stop hub for students, encompassing not only library services, but Careers, IT, Pastoral Care and social learning spaces. I am sure you will agree that The Davis Centre is the jewel in the crown of the Hobart Campus and it is time to celebrate its present and its future.
