Week five already!

By now students are settled into their classes. The course change process has concluded and college life should be ticking along as expected. I am pleased to see students making the most of our wonderful facilities during break times; relaxing in bean bags on the lawns, playing soccer on the oval and tennis on the courts, enjoying lunch time music, engaging in important social connections in the Academic Resource Centres. The work-life balance most certainly applies to students as many have jobs and sporting commitments outside of school and when these are combined with significant academic or Vocational Education and Training demands, there is even more need for students to understand the importance of down time.

Extended Breaks/Holidays – I ask that families are mindful of not taking students out of school for extended periods of time. For example, a holiday for two weeks equates to six sessions missed for each subject. Students run the risk of falling behind and catch up can really be quite difficult. I ask that parents contact me directly if planning significant breaks for students this year.

We are approaching the half-way mark in the term and it is timely that I remind students of the importance of punctuality, attendance and wearing the college uniform correctly and proudly. Bad habits now may result in regret later in the year. At the first assembly my message to students was simple: turn up, work hard, be kind. That is a simple yet winning formula.

The Global Cultures and Languages Society held their first meeting in Hobart on Friday and our French class have been using a variety of games for learning including “C'est Qui?” ("Guess Who?").

Japanese Class News

The Japanese class has been power reading! A skill known as Tadoku pushes students to read a variety of texts above their reading level, without the use of a dictionary! It has been amazing to see student progress so far.

Exchange Student News

Guilford Young College supports both inbound and outbound exchange programs through companies such as AFS Intercultural Programs, Rotary and Students of the World. Currently, we have two students on exchange in 2024; Juliet Wassouf in France and Charlie Dargue in the USA.

If you are interested in finding out about going on exchange or hosting an exchange student this year, there will be a lunchtime information session on the Hobart Campus on March 19 and March 20 in Glenorchy. Please see the Connect homepage for further details closer to the time or register your interest with Kristin Leeds Head of Languages.

Do you speak another language?

A Special Opportunity exists for Students who speak another language. Each year students who can competently speak, write, read and comprehend another language may have the opportunity to sit a Nationally and Interstate Assessed Language (NIAL) exam.

If you are interested please email Ms Leeds (Hobart) or Ms Lynch (Glenorchy). Applications close Friday 22 March.

Inter house Sport

The Hobart Student Leaders have organise an Inter house Soccer Competition to be played at lunchtime on Friday’s. The first game was extremely successful with a lot of interest and enthusiasm. Congratulation to Guzman for defeating Bosco 4-2. We look forward to Guzman playing against Tennison next week.

A good breakfast can make or break your day!! Free breakfast is available for all in a quiet relaxing spot.

Just Act Committee

The Just Act Committee’s have begun meeting once a fortnight on each campus they are a great source of information for a range of outreach options including, Vinnies activities, Edmund Rice Camp information, Breakfast Club on each campus and Caritas fund raisers. If you’d like to join email Mrs McManus (Hobart) or Mrs MacGregor (Glenorchy).

Focus Days

It is a requirement of the Do Something! program that our students attend a once a year Focus Day. Each day has its own theme and is year level specific. The day is run by skilled facilitator and musician Mike Fitzpatrick!

This is a compulsory day and students will attend school at the normal times. Students are to wear school sports uniform or warm, practical casual clothes suitable for movement. If you have any questions please contact Mrs McManus (Hobart) or Mrs MacGregor (Glenorchy).

• Tuesday March 19 Hobart Campus in the Performing Arts Centre (Year 11s only).

• Wednesday March 20 from Glenorchy Campus in the Don Bosco Theatre (Year 11s only).

• Thursday March 21 – Don Bosco Theatre (transport arranged – bus to and from the Don Bosco Theatre) Year 12s combined.
