What does it mean to be to be a successful Guilford Young College student?

As we commence our academic year, we look forward to seeing our Year 12 students graduate from the College having successfully lived the values of GYC. The new Graduating Expectations for Guilford Young College provide a standard for students to aspire to, as they make the most of their time at the College.

We will write to families later this term with more details on these expectations. However, students have already been provided with the general categories:

Growth – self-development through participation in our Do Something! program
Courage – taking responsibility for meeting the student code of conduct
Connection – engaging with learning through regularly attending school and completing assessment tasks
Connection – engaging with the community through tutor, and College faith and cultural activities

We look forward to supporting our students as they participate in all aspects of college life.

Parents and Carers are invited to our Meet the Tutor Information Evening!

There will be important information provided regarding the College’s new learning management system ‘Connect’ and updated College policies, including mobile phone use. Following an opening presentation, Parents and Carers will have the opportunity to meet their child's Tutor (Pastoral Care) teacher with time to ask questions. Students are not expected to attend.

The event will be held at the Glenorchy Campus (Creative Arts Centre) and the Hobart Campus (Assembly Area) on Thursday 22 February beginning at 5.30pm and concluding at 7.00pm. Light refreshments will be provided at the beginning of the evening.

This evening is essential for all students enrolled in Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses being delivered by Guilford Young College.

It is also a requirement that Parents and Carers attend the evening as it forms an integral part of our process in order to ensure that the demands of the VET courses are fully understood. There will be opportunities to meet VET teachers, learn more about courses, view training facilities where available and clarify anything else you'd like to know.

The event will be held in the Don Bosco Theatre on the Glenorchy campus with entry via Mill Lane and limited parking on site.

Sport

It has been great to see all the excitement with students signing up for Term 1 Sports. While the Boys 1st XI Cricket Team started a few weeks ago the remainder of the rosters start this week.

Cricket

The Boys 1st XI cricket team started the season before school commenced with two day games against Launceston Church Grammar and Hutchins. A win against Grammar with standout performances by Blake Garratt (5 Wickets) and Captain Joe McGann (126 runs), was followed by a loss against Hutchins. Lochie Davey with 4 wickets was our best player in the match.

Last Saturday we played St. Patricks in a one day game, where the opposition proved too strong. Lochie Davey was again our leading wicket taker and Ben George our highest scorer with the bat. Our final game is in two weeks.

Sport Uniforms

For some sports the students wear the GYC sport uniform, for most team sports students will hire a uniform through the College via the QKR app or they can pay the Office.

Cost is generally $25 and they will be refunded $20 upon the return of the uniform at the end of the roster. Bathers, athletics/cross country uniform and rowing zoot suits can also be purchased from the Uniform Shop on the Glenorchy campus.

Do you speak another language?

A Special Opportunity exists for Students who speak another language. Each year students who can competently speak, write, read and comprehend another language may have the opportunity to sit a Nationally and Interstate Assessed Language (NIAL) exam. These exams are offered to recognise the skill that background language students possess and if students are successful, they can gain 15 points towards their TCE in addition to ATAR points.

Students, Parents and Carers who are interested in benefitting from this great opportunity in 2024 should email Ms Leeds on the Hobart Campus or Ms Lynch at the Glenorchy Campus.

2024 applications close Friday 22 March. You can find more information about Nationally or Interstate Assessed Languages via the TASC website.

English and Humanities Tutorials

English Tutorials are scheduled every Thursday from 3.30 – 4.30!

Hobart students – please go to A303.
Glenorchy students – please go to the Academic Resource Centre

Students of all English classes and levels are welcome. Humanities students who require extra support referencing, proofreading and research are also welcome to attend.

Signing In and Out
Students are reminded that they need to sign out with the Student Support Supervisor at the start of Session 3 when they are leaving the College. This will avoid unnecessary notifications being sent home.

Absentees
For new parents use this form. In the future this will be reported via the Connect platform. Details coming soon. For existing parents please use Parent Access Module (PAM).
